A DIY builder is the right call for some people. If you enjoy design work, have spare evenings, and only need a simple page, a $20-a-month template can do the job.
The hidden cost is your time and the gaps: search setup, speed, security, and the layout decisions that make a site feel trustworthy. Most owners stall halfway and the site sits unfinished for months.
A custom build front-loads that work for you. Signal is $2,000 flat, you see the finished site before you pay anything, and you never touch a line of code unless you want to.
What DIY actually costs
The sticker is $20 a month. The real bill is the thirty evenings it eats and the search setup nobody does. Two years in, a DIY site has cost more than a custom build and still has gaps.
We meet Detroit owners every month who have been 'almost done' with their Wix site since last year. That unfinished site is what customers see.
What custom buys you
A custom build is not a prettier template. It is a site shaped around how your customers decide, with the search, speed, and security work done by people who do it every week.
It also comes with two people who know your site by name. When something breaks or you need a change, you are not troubleshooting a forum at midnight.
The honest crossover point
If your business is a hobby or a side project, DIY is fine. If the site is supposed to bring in customers, custom wins the math inside two years.
Run your own numbers: builder fees plus your hourly value plus the customers the unfinished site never called.
Quick answers.
Can I edit a custom site myself?
Yes, with Beacon Portal. Text, photos, and pages, without code.
Do you use WordPress?
No. We build lighter, faster sites and pair them with Beacon Portal for editing.
Can you finish my half-built Wix site?
We usually rebuild it instead. By the time we are called, the template has hit its ceiling.
What if I hate the preview?
You say so and you owe nothing. That is the entire risk.
